Herrmann's classic 1967 photo of the four Beatles at Abbey Road on Thursday March 30th 1967 shows them alongside their famed producer Sir George Martin during the recording of the seminal album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Titled 'smoke', this photo captures the atmosphere of the recording studio with McCartney riffing on a guitar whilst the other Beatles look on. A puff of smoke emanates from McCartney's mouth. Whilst Martin stares straight down the barrel of the lens, the Beatles, presumably so oblivious to cameras by this time, simply ignore the photographer, which is exactly how Herrmann liked it.

Of the four Beatles, it was only Lennon who bothered to speak to the photographer with a cursory, "watcha mate".

March 30th 1967 turned out to be a historic day in the Beatles calendar as following the recording session photographed here by Herrmann, they made their way to Michael Cooper's Flood Street studio to be photographed for one of the most famous album covers of all time, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
